Where Heritage Becomes Luxury

Kantha by Farah Khan is a Kolkata-based luxury label dedicated to reimagining Kantha embroidery for the connoisseur of handcrafted textiles. Rooted in Bengal’s rich textile heritage, we transform traditional craft into refined, contemporary expressions of timeless design.

About Us

Our collections feature luxury Kantha sarees, dupattas, stoles, and hand-embroidered textiles — meticulously crafted by master artisans in rural Bengal on the finest pure silks, tussars and handloom cotton. No two pieces are ever identical. Each is defined by its individuality, intricate detailing, and the quiet sophistication that only true handwork can achieve.

Working closely with our in-house design team and a dedicated network of artisans — over 95% of whom are women — we ensure that every creation reflects both authenticity and modern relevance. This direct collaboration preserves the integrity of traditional Kantha hand embroidery while presenting it through a distinctly contemporary lens.

We believe in slow fashion and sustainable luxury. Our processes are ethical, low-impact, and mindful — prioritizing quality, longevity, and minimal waste over mass production and fleeting trends.

The Kantha Store by Farah Khan represents the essence of Indian craftsmanship — offering designer Kantha sarees and luxury handcrafted textiles for those who understand that the most beautiful and enduring things are always made by hand.

Our Founder

Farah Khan didn’t plan to become a champion of Bengal’s most treasured craft.

She was an army wife — following her husband from posting to posting across India, living in places she hadn’t chosen, finding beauty in each one. In Kashmir, she discovered Sozni and Aari hand embroidery for the first time. She began working with Kashmiri artisans on Pashmina shawls and stoles in 1999, learning the language of needle and thread.

Then came the posting that changed everything.

In 2004, she arrived in a small town in rural West Bengal. She visited the villages. She walked into homes where women sat by windows in the morning light, needles moving through fabric with practiced calm. What she found in those villages moved her deeply. Women who had inherited one of India’s finest needlework traditions were watching their craft slowly disappear — and with it, their livelihoods. The stitch that had clothed Bengal for centuries was stagnant.
Farah decided she wouldn’t let it.

She spent four years learning the intricacies of Kantha, building trust with the women artisans, earning her place in their world. She began selling pieces in army circles. The response was immediate — women who had never seen authentic Kantha fell in love with it at first touch.

In 2008, when her husband was posted to Kolkata, she opened her first dedicated Kantha boutique in Kolkata’s Fort William. Not a corner of a larger store. Not an online catalogue. A proper home for the finest Kantha in Bengal. In 2022 she opened her Flagship exclusive Kantha Store in Loudon Street, in the heart of Kolkata.

What began as one woman’s conviction has grown into a community — 95% women artisans, working in their homes and villages, stitching pieces that are now shipped to buyers across India and the world.

Every piece you buy from The Kantha Store keeps that art alive.

What We do?

The Kantha Store is a social impact enterprise based in Kolkata. Our mission is simple: to ensure that Kantha — one of India's finest hand embroidery traditions — gets the recognition and the market it deserves.

We work directly with artisans

Not through middlemen. Not through third-party suppliers. We build relationships in the villages, stitch by stitch, season by season. 95% of our artisans are women, working in their homes and communities, passing this craft to the next generation through demand — the only thing that truly keeps a tradition alive.

We believe in slow fashion

Every piece we promote takes months to make. We don't believe in fashion fads. We believe in pieces that are worn for years, then handed down over generations. Kantha is not seasonal. It is enduring.

We are committed to fair trade

Every artisan who works with us is paid fairly for their time and skill. Every Kantha is made in rural Bengal, by women karigars, using natural fabrics. No shortcuts. No compromise.

We are entirely eco-friendly

Our processes are organic and sustainable. The fabrics are natural — pure silk, tussar, cotton. The dyes respect the environment. The packaging is designed to be reused. A Kantha piece that lasts decades is, by definition, the most sustainable garment you can own.

“Kantha by Farah Khan is more than a label. It is a conviction — that the most beautiful things are made slowly, by hand, by women who have spent a lifetime learning how. If you wear our pieces, you are part of that story.”
